Rockville Woman Rescued, Three Dogs Die in Fire

Woman hospitalized after Tuesday morning blaze at North Van Buren Street home.

A woman was rescued but three dogs were killed Tuesday morning in a fire that swept through a single-family home at 207 North Van Buren St. in Rockville, the county fire and rescue service reported.

The woman was taken to the hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries, said Beth Anne Nesselt, a county fire and rescue spokeswoman. The woman was suffering from smoke inhalation.

About 65 to 70 firefighters responded to the call about 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nesselt said. The fire occurred about three blocks west of the Rockville Volunteer Fire Department’s Station 3 in Town Center. Units from other county fire stations also responded.

Firefighters removed the woman from a bedroom window in the rear of the burning home, Nesselt said.

The home had a smoke alarm. “Until we get the investigation report it's unclear whether [the alarm] was functioning,” Nesselt said.

An investigation into the fire’s cause and origin is ongoing.
