We're through the New Year's Day (OK, Jan. 2 this year—thanks NFL) college football bowl blitz, with more Bowl Championship Series games on the way this week en route to the BCS national title game on Jan. 9. With so many games to follow, Rockville Patch takes a timeout to revisit its bowl picks contest.
The following article ran at the beginning of bowl season. It has been updated with the winners for each bowl through Monday.
As of kickoff of today's Allstate (thanks corporate sponsorship) Sugar Bowl, Rockville Patch sports editor Aaron Oster leads with 19 correct picks out of 29 games to Richard Montgomery High School football coach Neal Owens's 16 correct picks. Click on "Aaron's Picks" and "Coach Owens's Picks" below to see how they picked and see the results of each game.
Happy New Year, Rockville!
Original, Dec. 22:
With the holiday season comes the gift that keeps on giving to sports fans: It's college football bowl season.
In honor of the more than three weeks of bowls, from the Meineke Car Care of Texas Bowl (Texas A&M vs. Northwestern) to the Gator Bowl (Ohio State vs. Florida) to the BCS National Championship game (Alabama vs. LSU) Rockville Patch asked a high school football coach to pick the winner of each bowl game in order to see how his final record fares against that of our sports editor.
In the coach's corner is Neal Owens. Owens led the Richard Montgomery Rockets to a 5-5 record this season, their best record since 2004, and expects even more out of next year's team. Owens attended the University of Dayton.
In the editor's corner is Aaron Oster. Oster is sports editor for Rockville Patch. He attended the University of Maryland, College Park, and because of that, has tried to ignore the fact that college football exists for the past couple of months.
Owens and Oster renew their rivalry after last year's inaugural Bowl Picks Bash, which ended in a draw. While the BCS is supposed to ensure a clear national champion, "The Bash"—like the NCAA—is still resisting a playoff system. No matter. This year's contest is for twice the bragging rights.
You can play too. Click on the Facebook "Recommend" button on the page that you think will have the most correct picks when bowl season ends. And if you're feeling lucky, give us your picks in the "Leave A Comment" box at the bottom of this page.
