Rockville Cancels Its Fireworks
Decision follows cancellation of county displays in Wheaton and Germantown.
Following the county's lead, Rockville has canceled its Fourth of July fireworks display for Wednesday, City Spokeswoman Marylou Berg said in an email Monday evening.
Rockville's annual Independence Day celebration was scheduled for 7 to 10 p.m. at Montgomery College's Rockville campus. The event was scheduled to culminate in a 20-minute fireworks display.
Montgomery County announced earlier Monday evening that county-sponsored fireworks planned for Kensington and Germantown were canceled. Gaithersburg also canceled its fireworks plans. Takoma Park's fireworks will go on as scheduled. Click here for details.
The decisions come in the wake of Friday's strong storm, which toppled trees and led to widespread power outages that persist across Montgomery County.
Power outages and downed power lines are limiting access to the Montgomery College campus, Rockville officials said in a news release.
"Although Pepco is working to restore power and clear downed power lines, there is no way to guarantee roads will be cleared in time for the event," the release said.
The city considered other options before deciding to cancel the event, Rockville City Police Chief Terrance N. Treschuk said in the release. "It was a tough call, but the public's safety has to come first," he said.

We actually saw a sliver of a really nice fireworks display in Rockville on Saturday night, looking south from Rockville Town Square. We could see bits of it between the towers of the Executive Office Building and the Judicial Center, just above the Regal. I guess we got lucky!
