Illegal Immigration and College Tuition
Is the Dream Act a further erosion of American identity or a stopgap until the federal government acts on immigration?
Brandon Rippeon, a Republican candidate for Maryland's 6th congressional district, argues liberals in Annapolis believe U.S. citizens and illegal immigrants deserve the same rights. Saqib Ali, a former Democratic member of the House of Delegates, says the federal government needs to act on immigration.
Rippeon's Point:
The Maryland Dream Act proposed by legislative members of the “New American Caucus” represents the latest attempt of pro-illegal alien policy-makers to erode and undermine our American identity.
State Sen. Rich Madaleno claims the Dream Act is aimed at creating "equity" among U.S. citizens and illegal aliens. That’s correct; the progressive liberals in Annapolis believe American citizens and illegals are entitled to the same rights, privileges and benefits. I adamantly disagree.
Obviously Annapolis fails to recognize a fundamental aspect of citizenship; it is socially consequential by definition. Citizens (members) should be afforded certain privileges that are distinguishable from those of non-members, and certainly those individuals who are here illegally. Citizenship and the benefits attached to it should be valued and desirable, not handed out like Halloween candy to anyone coming to State Senator Madaleno’s door.
Instead of passing laws that reward and encourage more individuals to enter the country (and come to Maryland) illegally, legislators should focus on updating and improving the immigration process which in turn would strengthen our national character.
Current U.S. immigration is based on “family unification,” while immigration policy of other industrial nations centers on “skill sets.” This is why in general uneducated, low-skill set individuals with no means come to America, while educated individuals with high-skill sets and means immigrate to Europe and Asia. To succeed in a global economy America should be competing for the best and brightest workers, not looking to import more poverty into our county and individual states such as Maryland at the expense of the citizen-taxpayer.
Ali’s Counterpoint:
High skill set people emigrating to Europe and Asia? Are you sure? I doubt the anti-immigrant crowd in Europe would agree with you. Mostly they spend their time condemning low-income Algerians, Turks, Pakistanis and Albanians as a stain on thier societies. Prime Minister David Cameron lashed out at multiculturalism in UK as a destructive force. The truth is poorer people will move across national boundaries to secure a better life for themselves. For Central and South Americans, the United States is the closest. For Africans and Middle-Easterners Europe is closest. In both cases they are sometimes vilified by people in their host countries. What’s new?
You are right though. Illegal immigration is a serious problem that must be dealt with. The federal government needs to get its head out of the sand and create a path to citizenship for undocumented people who are already here and concurrently secure the border. Rounding up and deporting approximately 12 million people is a right-wing pipe dream. It’s not practical and it will disrupt countless industries. Until the feds get their heads out of the sand, state legislators will have to find stopgaps.
I was a card-carrying member of the “New American Caucus” in the state legislature. And in 2007 I proudly voted for the bill in question. It’s more well-known federal namesake is a much broader bill. This one says that any student who graduates from a Maryland high school should be given in-state tuition — regardless of immigration status. It makes sense because these undocumented people are here to stay. Like it or not, they will probably be members of our society for the rest of their lives. Their children will be Americans. They are overwhelmingly law-abiding, productive and yes, often taxpaying. Madaleno’s bill will help bring them out of the shadows and make them contributing, successful members of our society.

Oh, do we U.S. citizens have rights in Mexico I'm not aware of? Can I get free medical care for my children in Mexico?

Children of immigrants, regardless of the status of their parents, need to be accorded the same opportunity for education as the children of citizens in the state they live in. It is the right thing to do. It is the American thing to do.

No. You are wong if you are saying they should get instate tuition. The children of illegal aliens can attend Maryland colleges and such but are to pay the out of state tution rate.
Additionally, the children of legal aliens and citizens should not have to compete for a seat in a Maryland college with any illegal alien.

Why do law makers believe that illegal people and families are something on the bottom of their shoe? Why don't they do the right American thing and allow a process for getting the people to come forward out of the shadows?

I agree with Rippon and believe no illegal in this country should receive a free handout from our government and from my tax dollars. STOP ENCOURAGING ILLEGALS to cross our borders; let’s take care of our own first. Let's take care of our young yes, but let's not forget who's picking up the tab for this bill. Let's get back on track with our economy and let's get rid of our dependency on foreign countries for oil and pay down our debt. IN OTHER WORDS...LET"S start living within our means. The government has to get rid of its credit card mentality and go back to fiscal responsibility and a balanced budget... As I told my children growing up, "You can't have everything you want NOW. Save for it and only then can you have it.

I keep hearing that the millions of illegal invaders cannot be deported. What nonsense!. Presidents Hoover, Truman and Eisenhower all deported millions and it actually helped our economy, as it would now. The 8 million felon illegal invaders now holding American jobs should be concentrated on first to allow some of the 22 million unemployed Americans now looking for ANY job to feed and shelter their families a crack at these positions. Stop the nonsense! Deport the invaders, seal the border and jail the greedy, criminal employers!

It amazes me how illegal alien cheerleaders call citizens who want our immigration laws enforced "bigots."
You know what's bigoted? People who think they are above the law. People who refuse to assimilate. People who feel fully entitled to their parasitic lifestyles at the expense of Americans who never asked them here.
Illegal aliens are invaders. They give no respect, and they deserve no respect.

NumbersUSA and hundreds of grass-roots groups and associations will never accept another amnesty, any defacto amnesty such as the Dream Act or any method to legitimize the minor or odious criminals who snubbed our laws. More and more American citizens are being victimized by illegal aliens, thanks to a a failure to build the real double border fence, topped with concertina razor wire as according to the 2006 Secure Fence Act. Confront your Senator, Congressman at State and Federal level, and ask them why taxpayers are supporting illegal aliens in Health Care and education, and other social programs by calling Washington at 202-224-3121.

Thank you, another good post. America needs to take care of Americans first.
Illegal aliens have human rights, and no illegal aliens should be abused, but they should NOT have any special privileges either.
They should be deported.

By the hundreds and thousands they will leave stringent restrictionist States as they did in the Great State of Arizona, where these people depleted public entitlements. Now they have attention diverted to New Mexico plus other pliable States to exploit the public services. So if States do not author laws such as E-Verify 287 (G) and other harsh enforcement treatments, illegal alien eyes will turn towards--New Mexico or YOUR--State and your welfare handouts. A despicable example is the Sanctuary State of California that is still suffering from a $24 Billion dollar treasury loss and still being monetarily ransacked by illegal aliens education, health care, public programs and overcrowded prisons. Join the TEA Party as they are fighting for smaller government and less taxes extorted from your wages.Already a million plus Taxpayer's have investigated truthful illegal alien welfare costs, population statistics and your chance to fax for free the leadership in Washington at NumbersUSA pro-sovereignty organization.

A DIVIDED NATION
The American people are furious and frustrated with being taxed to support foreigners, who shouldn't even be here.
We must expeditiously rethink the massive budget deficits at not just the federal level, but State and even local levels of government. Instead of short changing the Senior Citizens as Washington did last year, veteran warriors, and those with disabilities, homeless, single mothers, sick and those living in poverty, remove the incentives for illegal aliens to come here. Republican and Democratic must eradicate the job magnet for foreign nationals. We must completely sever welfare payments, food stamps and every conceivable penny to illegal aliens. We must revise the 14th amendment as the dollar amount outstrips even the costly education for children of illegal nationals. Even if the courts don’t agree in amending the provision of the birthright citizenship, the parents if illegal should be deported as the IRS will be confiscating your taxes to cater to them.

We shouldn't be ashamed of cutting any benefits, as the politicians have intentionally fashioned the entitlement system for over thirty years, with billions being spent on millions of illegal aliens with some never paying any federal or state taxes. In fact foreigners are sending billions of dollars to foreign countries annually. One of the biggest frauds preyed upon by foreign nationals, is the IRS child credit fraud. Many cases of both Father and Mother asked separately for reimbursement tax credits for the same child or even some non-existent. Even Before they come here from across the Ocean or from either border, they have been taught ahead of time how to work the system and get the maximum benefits from our welfare system. We can start reducing the illegal immigrant population, by simply enforcing the 1986 immigration laws. By demanding immigration policing laws, Utah as an example has saved itself from further barrage of economic illegal aliens.

AMERICAN CITIZENS MUST CONFRONT THIS OUT-OF-CONTROL PROBLEM AND PICK A SIDE? LIBERTARIANS WANT WIDE OPEN BORDERS AND THE FREE MOVEMENT OF FOREIGNERS. GO TO A FEW FOREIGN COUNTRIES AND SEE WHAT MULTICULTURALISM, MULTI-LANGUAGES AND MULTI-RELIGIONS HAVE ACCOMPLISHED? GO TO ENGLAND AND OTHER PLACES IN EUROPE WHERE THERE IS GROWING UNREST FROM THESE VERY ISSUES.

Agribusinesses should be concerned, because taxpayers right now are supporting the children of illegal workers. Americans are hardly aware that the agriculture companies, including mega farms do not pay for the children education, health care or other financial services. It's yet another massive corporate welfare programs, that citizens and legal residents are being taxed. Join NumbersUSA, and the Tea Party and find out the truth, where hundreds of billions of--YOUR--money is going? Confront your Senator, Congressman at State and Federal level at 202-224-3121 and ask them why farm and agricultural employers are not supporting their Guest Workers in Health Care and education, and other social programs for the illegal alien children and family members?

I agree with Francis and Brandon Rippeon. A "right-winged pipe dream" - puleease! I want our legislators to work with the law and to modify the laws that are not working. Instead of taking steps to afford illegal immigrants in-state tuition benefits IF they pay Maryland taxes for at least one year, why aren't our delegates pressuring state senators to support immigration reform - the real issue here? The cost differential between in-state and out-of-state for ONE YEAR at the University of Maryland is $16,000. Is it possible for an illegal immigrants to earn wages that would be taxed the same value of the benefits they would receive in one year? What would be worse would be to educate an illegal who, after graduation, cannot legally find work in his or her field! I should give up my son or daughter's spot in MD schools at in-state rates for what reason, exactly?

Beth has a point. I wonder if Maryland is planning to implement an affirmative action plan to force Maryland universities to accept illegal immigrant students. This would also allocate financial aid to illegals.
