Hometown Holidays Final Numbers: Big Crowds Despite a Lot of Heat and a Bit Less Funk
'Typical' crowd of 60,000 to 70,000 enjoyed the annual street festival, the city said.
The 90-degree days and absence of the “Godfather of Funk” George Clinton did not appear to deter attendees from kicking off the summer at Hometown Holidays on Saturday and Sunday.
About 60,000 to 70,000 people attended the annual Memorial Day celebration in Rockville Town Center, which is “fairly typical” compared to years past, Rockville spokeswoman JoAnn Grbach said Tuesday.
Grbach said a few people asked about the absence of Clinton, Sunday’s initial headliner who canceled his appearance in Rockville due to a staph infection in his leg.
“But it seemed like a lot of people had gotten the word,” Grbach said. “We were still able to provide a great performer. I don’t think it affected the weekend.”
Grammy-winning blues musician Taj Mahal was chosen as the replacement for Sunday’s headline spot.
"I think people came out with the spirit of seeing national and local performers and it was still the idea of bringing together the neighborhoods of Rockville and people from the region," Grbach said. "We’re really excited about it."
