Dawson's Market Construction To Be Completed In 'Summer'

The new Town Square grocery isn't providing a specific timetable for its opening.

A new grocery store in Rockville Town Square may be opening a few months later than originally planned but “the wait will be worth it,” a spokeswoman for the store said.

“Most importantly, we are concerned with taking the time necessary to make sure the store perfectly suits the needs and wants of the customers,” Becky Lakin, the recently named marketing director for Dawson’s Market, wrote in an email response to a question about the opening date. “We will be starting construction in a few weeks and are aiming to have construction completed this Summer.”

The store isn’t being any more specific than that.

After signing a lease for Town Square in September, Dawson’s Market owner Rick Hood said he expected a March or April opening date. Federal Realty Investment Trust, which owns and operates the retail and residential district in Rockville Town Center, confirmed a spring opening at that time.

A news release from Federal Realty last month announced four new restaurants for Town Square and stated, in the last paragraph, that the store’s opening would not be until summer.

“We'll then move into training our employees, moving in inventory and all the while, sourcing and securing product with our local vendors and farmers,” Lakin wrote. “We are eager to open and appreciate the patience of the Rockville community. The wait will be worth it; we're taking the time and steps to ensure that's the case.”

It would be a nice idea to add some historical information in the store or maybe a plaque or something on the front of it. The Dawson farm on Rockville Pike was at one time an integral part of growing up in Rockville. The Hungerford neighborhood, Richard Montgomery High School grounds, the old Park Street ES grounds, the old Rockville Fireman's Carnival grounds, Dogwood Park were all once property owned by the Dawson's.
Their farm was a great place to explore with the horses, barns and most of all Rose Dawson who would allow us to see their Indian relics. Imagine horses at the edge of Rockville Pike at Ritchie Pkwy. today...........

I concur.

We need the reminders to help us appreciate our history.

I've been curious from the start of when the talk of a grocery store was going in, where are people going to park to load their groceries? There doesn't seem to be anyplace from what can been seen to do this. Surely they don't expect people to carry them to one of the garages?

d: The street address for the store is on North Washington Street, which means its entrance will be to the parking lot near the dry cleaners and across North Washington from Hickman's Exxon (behind the station in this photo: http://rockville.patch.com/listings/hickmans-exxon#photo-2382272 ). I always assumed there would be a pick up lane or something of the like there. Has anyone out there seen detailed plans?

I live in Town Square, next door to the market location. I'm very happy to see the market coming. As I look at the parking area, though, I just don't see how they're going to pull off the auto access. That is one small lot, even if it is on top of underground parking. Also, there is no light at that entrance, which can already be tough to get out of.

This market has been a joke from the git go! The management company should have given the space to Trader Joe's at a below market rate.Lack of parking raises considerabe doubt about this venture..

The market hasn't been a joke. It's not even here and the delay was announced before. I am glad it is coming and can't wait. Trader Joe's offers me nothing I can't get cheaper at Mom's Organic Market or offer more variety than Whole Foods. So glad we were able to attract a new business to Rockville and one from Virginia at that--the place everyone claims is SO much better for business than Montgomery County. That's a joke.

On the wise suggestion of a Rockville Patch user I've attached a map at the right of the article to show where Dawson's Market will be located at the corner of North Washington Street and Beall Avenue. It's address will be 225 N. Washington Street.

I was not impressed it is a very over priced market $1,29 for a supermarket bagel is crazy anything you can get there you can get for less and you don't have to go very far to do so.
