City Police Go 'All In' the Bay for Special Olympics
Officers and staff raised $1,600 as part of the state police Polar Bear Plunge.
The Rockville City Police Department raised $1,600 for Special Olympics Maryland by taking the plunge—in the Chesapeake Bay—on Friday.
Twelve officers and staff joined Boomer, the department’s K-9 officer, on “Frigid Friday,” the test run for the 16th annual Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge. More than 300 law enforcement officers and 3,100 students from across the state, including a group from Quince Orchard High School in North Potomac, dipped themselves in the chilly water at Sandy Point State Park near the Bay Bridge in Annapolis.
More than 11,000 people took the plunge on Saturday, raising more than $2.1 million for Special Olympics, which is funded in Maryland by donations alone. Rockville Police support Special Olympics throughout the year, including sending representatives to the winter and summer games as medal presenters, according to a news release from the city.
