Barricade Situation in Twinbrook Ends Peacefully

Police: A woman threatened suicide with a gun; dismissal delayed for students at nearby school.

A barricade situation at a home in Rockville’s Twinbrook neighborhood ended peacefully Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Montgomery County and Rockville city police responded around 3 p.m. to a call in the 13000 block of Okinawa Avenue for a woman who was threatening suicide with a firearm, Officer Janelle Smith, a county police spokeswoman, said.

Around 4 p.m. the woman voluntarily came out of the house without incident, said Officer Britta Thomas, a county police spokeswoman.

Students who walk home from Twinbrook Elementary School were held until the situation was resolved, Maj. Michael W. England said in an email obtained by Rockville Patch.

"Their parents were called and asked to pick up their child," Dana Tofig, a county schools spokesman, said in an email.

Three buses at Julius West Middle School—which is not in Twinbrook but serves students who live there—were delayed until the incident was resolved, Tofig said. The school's principal called parents to notify them of the situation, Tofig said.

"As always, our first priority was the safety and security of our students," he said. "At no time were students at Twinbrook or any other school in any danger because of this incident."

It was unclear how many police officers responded to the scene, Thomas said. A nearby church was used as a staging area, she said.

“We were getting calls from people in the area asking what was going on,” she said.

Good that this turned out without serious incident. It is that time of year where families are in great stress and many are depressed. We must watch out for each other and help where we can. I was driving down Gude Drive when I heard so many police cars raise down the street. Then there was a backup on Viers Mill Road. Little did I know the cars were raising to my neighborhood and families were worried about their children being safe.
The other night I spoke with a friend who was depressed and couldn't tell me what the depression was about. I contacted his sister to let her know about our hour conversation and that I believe that my dear friend could use some counseling as I did when I got my divorce. I hope my suggestion will help. Will know later.

Brigetta, you are so right to remind all of us about the gift of sharing, especially this time of year when so many high expectations can create more ill feelings than joyful ones. Listening and a kind word is the best gift we can give.

The "nearby church" used as a staging area is also the home of Redwood Montessori Academy, a private school for children from age 2 through Elementary. While our students were in no danger, it was quite a shock for parents to come for dismissal and find blocked roads, police tape, and an overwhelming number of police cars and other emergency vehicles in the parking lot and the access road! Parents arrived panic-stricken, thinking that something terrible had happened at their child's school. But our children were safe and well cared for and went home without incident. I wish we could have provided the same comfort for our parents!

I received an email from Twinbrook Elementary stating that there was an incident on Okinawa Avenue, that it "did not impact the school at all", and that parents of walkers who likve on Okinawa were called to pick up their students at dismissal time. I had no idea this kind of ordeal went on. Notices should be a little more forthcoming. Such a vague message makes the imagination wander. Is there a listserv or mailing list for the Twinbrook Community that is limited to topics of police activity and crime in the neighborhood?

There is indeed a terrific Twinbrook listerv: Twinbrookneighbors@yahoogroups.com

Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/ and join the "Twinbrookneighbors" group. It's invaluable. It's where I first heard about this yesterday, and where the police ended up posting complete details of what was going on.
